As a community-based site, Can-Med can work under the jurisdiction and review of Central IRBs.  If a study requires the use of facilities within local institutions, such as the Royal Jubilee Hospital or The Victoria General Hospital, Can-Med will submit the study for review and approval by the  Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) Research Ethics Board. Examples of study requirements which mandate use of our local IRB include studies that involve the use of the operating room,  full body NMR scans and CT scans, as well as pathology services.
